Dandruff
Flaking of the scalp that occurs on greasy skin, often alongside acne, and sometimes a sign of PCOS.
Leaflet by Dr. D. A. Satish, MBBS, MD (AIIMS), FRCP (Glasgow), International Fellow AAD.
What it is
Dandruff occurs on greasy skin. Dr Satish’s acne leaflet notes that acne and dandruff both occur on greasy skin and can happen together. Moderate to severe dandruff on the scalp is also one of the signs listed in his polycystic ovarian syndrome leaflet.
What you can do
The acne leaflet advises cleansing the scalp two or three times a week, preferably with a shampoo.
If heavy dandruff comes with very oily skin, acne that does not respond to treatment, scalp hair loss or irregular periods, mention polycystic ovarian syndrome at your consultation.
A note on this page
The clinic’s patient leaflets do not yet include a sheet devoted to dandruff, so this page is deliberately short. Ask Dr Satish at your consultation for advice about your own scalp.
